Castro Laboreiro Hike: Roman Roads & Shepherd Villages
Guided day hike along Roman roads and shepherds' trails in the remote north of Peneda-Gerês National Park.
The experience
One of the most authentic corners of Portugal
Castro Laboreiro is one of the most remote corners of Portugal — and one of the most authentic. Walk with a local guide along Roman roads once used by shepherds moving their herds between summer and winter villages, cross old stone bridges and reach one of the oldest castles in the country.
Finish the day at the village museum, where the story of the brandas and inverneiras comes to life.
- Laboreiro river and native oak forests
- Castro Laboreiro Castle, one of the oldest in Portugal
- Roman roads and stone bridges
- Brandas and inverneiras — the summer and winter villages of transhumance
